Designers to Watch: Lala Berlin

Leyla Piedayesh started Lala Berlin, the coveted German ready-to-wear brand, in 2004. Beginning the label’s foray in to media and public attention at Premium trade show in Berlin, Lala has progressed from a modest knitwear line to an internationally stocked fashion house.

From the beginning, sumptuous textures of cashmere, silk and soft cottons have proved staples in collections. Luxury alongside tactility is paramount to Leyla, who used to knit the first garments herself. Since expansion, only some of the collection is produced in Berlin, yet craftsmanship remains the central ethos.

Since 2006 the brand’s flagship boutique has operated in the city’s fashionable Mitte district. The store is home to not only the seasonal collections but also limited edition pieces, collaborations and bespoke options for their discerning customer base. No wonder Lala Berlin has an impressive celebrity following.

‘On Some Faraway Beach’ is the theme for spring/summer 2014. A pulsating city in tropical heat provides inspiration, while botanics and urban life are reference points. Oversized palm prints in a sun faded coral is a reoccurring motif, as does a monochrome shark repeat print. The soft, powdery palette reflects sizzling heat and an azure blue sea; pale yellow and nude, provide the base to exciting pops of colour.

In amongst the billowing chiffon all-in-ones and cute, short ensembles, relaxed tailoring adds a more mature edge to the collection. Leyla’s signature knits are also present, seen in intricate designs with clever, cut-away panels. The new line is entirely appealing, perfect for a tropical getaway and yet stays wholly true to Lala Berlin’s practiced philosophy.
