Fall 2012 London Fashion Week: Aquascutum

- By Sarah-Leigh Wade -

Taking inspiration from iconic British interiors and architecture, for autumn/winter 12/13 Aquascutum’s design director Joanna Sykes presented a collection of chicly tailored outerwear and appealing separates. While the modern Aquascutum woman might be deemed ‘provocative, sexy and a touch dangerous’, the iconic British brand made sure not to stray too far in to the realms of Avant-garde.

Aquascutum was one London Fashion Week show that Team Olivia couldn’t wait to see, especially since Olivia has first hand experience working with Joanna after collaborating on Matches in-house label Freda in 2010, for which Jo was also head of design.

Showing in the opulent surroundings of the Savoy hotel’s ballroom, this season’s styling appeared almost modish, complete with model’s slicked back hair and a plethora of androgynous pieces. Inspiration taken from the angles and shadows cast by built up environments was clear, with upturned lapels and futurist shapes promoting a sharp, non-nonsense aesthetic. Oversized mannish coats and straight cut suits only added to the masculine feel.

A little femininity was seen in details; patent leather sat in panels on full leather trenches, sleeves featured fur edges or elbow patches and surprising cut away sections showed sensual glimpses of the small of the back and hips. Further highlights included a tweed dress with dropped arm holes and a fluid, draped back panel. Elbow length leather gloves added a little glamour while oxblood and gleaming white added a lift to the otherwise neutral, even urban, palette of stone colours and dark racing green.
