Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week: Calvin Klein

- By Andrea Mestrovic -

Over the years, Francisco Costa has been validly acknowledged for his innovation in design with a plethora of awards: Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Womenswear Designer of the Year -twice; Mortimer C. Ritter Award; Parsons The New School for Design Award; and Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt Fashion Design Award.  Prior to taking on the role of Women’s Creative Director with Calvin Klein, the Brazil native perfected his method skills at Gucci, Balmain Couture, and Oscar de la Renta.

Calvin Klein’s Fall 2012 collection was full of rousing ambiguities.   Inspired in part by the power and creativity of the Bauhaus women activists in the 1920’s and early 1930’s, Costa delivered a line-up of belted drift coats in animated shapes, yet flawless tailoring, and aerodynamic daytime leathers in unanticipated color combinations.

Apart from his standard palette of concentrated black and shades of tender grey, he infused this collection with soft yellow, muted red, and bright crimson.  Costa’s 1940’s full skirt in black with discrete, contrast yellow pleats, and cropped wide-leg yellow trouser paired with a belted leather sleeveless top, confirmed his theme of romantic feminism.  It is clear that these clothes were made for a creative, confident powerhouse with a disguised, but undeniably there, gentleness.
