Garments which have the ability to make an impact have always possessed drama, movement and glamour. From the ornamental jewellery and head pieces of ancient Egypt, to the more recent flapper dresses of the roaring twenties, arguably no trend provides more character, or demands more attention than the dynamic effect of fringe. Inject a shot of romantic, dancing elegance with long, fine fringing, or toughen up with a brutish quivering of shorter tassels: it’s time to get moving.
Fringe adorned the runways at SS12. Marchesa (below, right) and Gucci (below, center) showed love for the twenties with art deco prints and flapper inspired fringing which fell from dropped waistlines and from entire outfits, elegantly fluttering and swinging around the legs and ankles. Julien Macdonald (below, left) also celebrated the twenties with his take on the original flapper dresses, featuring shorter layered fringing creating a dramatic shudder of movement with every step.

Infuse interest into an otherwise subtle outfit with a fringed jacket or sweater, and embrace that kinetic energy. For full on glamour that will allure any eye, sparkle in a sequined or beaded flapper dress. For a less full on effect, a skirt and an understated, fitted top, with simple and elegant high heel. Let the fringe do the talking here, and be wary of over complicating the look with layering of other garments, or overwhelming accessories.
For grown up glam, longer lengths will create a sophisticated look that will fluidly move with a heavy, wistful grace. Full length skirts with long fine fringing will create a dramatic, elegant movement. Dresses and skirts with shorter hemlines are lengthened with floor skimming fringe and have a similar effect. Remember to keep the upper body clean and minimal to ensure you are not drowning in weighted material, and again, keep the shoes sleek and simple.
If you find your nerves can’t stand the full attention-grabbing effect of body-length fringe, there are other ways to use the vigorous life that it lends to an outfit. Statement necklaces, earrings and bracelets are the perfect way to add the trend to your look. Of course, the shoe is a great way to infuse fringe to into your outfit. It’s all about the movement, and every footstep will create a powerful jolt of energy, bringing it to life. Keep the tassels fine and the heels high on footwear in order to distance yourself from the ‘60s hippie look.
The fantastic point to fringing is anyone can do it. It can be utilised to suit any body shape, fit into any budget, and be worn on any occasion. Just keep it chic!
