On days when the “I don’t know what to wear” syndrome bites especially badly despite a wardrobe filled with clothes, basics will always be a girl’s best friend. But if you’re not so keen on pulling your skinny jeans out once more and are looking for a more sophisticated yet very on-trend look, wide-leg pants are a stylish staple. Since this season is all about the 70’s glamour, epitomized at Gucci (below right), Chloé (below center) and Marc by Marc Jacobs (below left), it seems to be the perfect timing to be a little bit more daring and wear your flares. Fear not, for our guide will clarify how to rock your wide-legs whether you are petite or tall, skinny or curvy, and they’ll be your new go-to on those mornings in no time.

High waisted wide leg pants can seem particularly challenging.  Instead of tucking in a fitted top or button-up blouse, which is a bit boring, try a slightly “shrunken” tee.  Look for tees that hit just below the waist-band, giving a casual but still pulled together look.  For more of a bohemian look, try a cropped loose camisole or a printed shirt paired with a sequined or a tuxedo jacket.   A look that’s been making the rounds is the “half tuck”.  Perfect for tops that are a bit too long or voluminous, the “half tuck” is simply tucking the front of your shirt into your pants (also an amazing way to incorporate a high waist, while concealing a wide hip).

Low-waisted wide leg pants are ideal to be assembled with a slightly oversized top or a chunky sweater banded at the bottom.  The fitted band enables you to wear volume at both the top and bottom without appearing sloppy. To accentuate your waistline or create the illusion of one, a belt is recommended, and will work best on slimmer women. Different cuts of wide–leg pants can effect the flow of the pants and therefore of your silhouette. Petite ladies should look for low waist-rise cuts with heels to elongate their legs. On the other hand, tall women can afford to wear cuffed cuts if they have a long torso. Pleated or palazzo draped pants along with biased cuts work best for women with larger thighs or hips.

Based on the time of the day and how comfortable you like to feel in your shoes a wedge or stilettos are the best opinion. If you are petite, a towering heel will give you the oomph of Miranda Priestly striding into the boardroom in her fabulous new wine-colored Celine wide-legs, and if you are naturally tall, a ballet flat or a low heel will channel Mlles. Hepburns—Audrey and Katherine, bein sur. Just remember the golden rule: the hem MUST slightly touch the floor to create a long and lean look. A hidden heel creates legs that go on for days, a point which even Miranda and Audrey could agree is enviable!

And last but not least, for the most daring — instead of going for a muted colored pants or denim, explore new textures or colors such as velvet or corduroys, as seen at Theysken’s Theory (below center), or bright colored denim and also very popular at Prabal Gurung (below left) this season, for a more playful touch. Both of these looks are very on-trend at the moment and can be worn from day to night without disregarding the option wearing them throughout the seasons. Who said corduroys were not suited for summer? Clearly, they haven’t seen Isabel Marant’s S/S11 (below right) collection!
