Last week, we told you about
musical duo Allison and Catherine of
The Pierces; whose latest album
‘You & I’ debuted at number 4 on the UK charts, later going on to reach UK Gold. Now, read on for the inspiration behind their style and fashion.
If you take the wistfulness of ‘70s singer/songwriter chic, throw in a bit of ‘20s glamour, and add an aura of Parisian bohemia, the picture that will begin to emerge is one of Allison and Catherine Pierce. To hear their music is to hear the sound of their fashion; haunting, coquettish reflections of a time past . The two sisters talked to us about their fashion icons and influences.

OP.com: You seem to be really influenced by the hippie/gypsy lifestyle. How would you say your style developed and evolved since your move from Alabama?
The Pierces: When we moved to New York City, our minds and eyes were opened in many ways, fashion being one of them. Everywhere you look are some of the best dressed people on the planet, and it is really inspiring. I learn so much about fashion by just sitting on a bench and watching people walk by.

OP.com: What other singers do you look up to in terms of their personal style?
The Pierces: Stevie Nicks, Jane Birkin, and Brigette Bardot. All of them timeless and classic.

OP.com: Where do you guys like to shop?
The Pierces: We love
Topshop, of course. It’s pretty much one stop shopping.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
OP.com: Some singer are seen as style icons (Gaga and Rihanna, for example. And of course, Madonna). How do you sartorial choices affect your music, and vice versa?
The Pierces: They do affect each other, but it is hard to say exactly how. I think the music dictates a certain feeling and you just find clothes that feel right with it.

OP.com: Do you feel a lot of pressure choosing what to wear while on stage? And how does your ‘stage’ look differ from your day to day look- if in fact, it does differ at all?
The Pierces: It can sometimes feel like a lot of pressure, but sometimes it’s really fun. There are some days when you feel like you have an endless supply of amazing outfits, and others when you can’t find a single thing you want to wear. Our day to day look is more laid back and comfortable. We still like to keep the gypsy feel in with accessories and things, but the heels are definitely shorter.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………….
OP.com: You’ve been touring the UK for the last several months. How has british fashion influenced your own style?
The Pierces: Being in London for the past year has been pretty inspirational fashion-wise. I love the tailored-put-together look that people do here. It has definitely changed the way I approach getting dressed in the morning
………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Mysterious and Gypset, the look of The Pierces is smartly eclectic: dangling pendants, cascading dresses, velvet, shearling and fur, seamlessly melded, resulting in a vintage boudoir affect. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………
