Summer-Time Beauty

- By Wendy Rowe -

Summer beauty is…
All about looking and feeling fresh – after the necessary extra coverage that skin needs in winter and the staple autumnal smokey-eye trend, it’s time to strip it right back and let skin breathe. Think clean, luminous skin that glows. Textures that are light on the skin, almost transparent, so you can see freckles showing through. Features are enhanced with light reflecting products, with eyes looking bright, cheeks appearing naturally flushed, as if you have been exercising outside, and a hint of moisturizing colour on the lips. To me, it’s really about looking healthy and clean; you need to create the fresh, vibrant feeling –  like you have just got out of the shower, or if you’re lucky, the ocean!

How to get that summer feeling…
Although we want to look au naturel and fresh, creating a clean, summer look unfortunately doesn’t happen by literally just having a shower. Skin is summer’s hero, so it’s super important that you get your skin in the best condition it can be, with regular cleansing, toning and using a very light moisturizer (think lotions in summer rather than heavy creams).  I like to boost lymphatic drainage by taking the time to massage my cleanser into skin, and I always prepare my skin for summer with an amazing facial that exfoliates away dead winter skin cells, and nourishes for the season ahead.

Key products to create the look

-
Different skin types and the quality of your skin will play a big part on which products are right for you during the summer climate, so although you might love your friend’s skin, don’t automatically think her favourite beauty essentials will work for you. Traveling is a lifestyle with my job, so I’ve spent years learning which products work in different weather conditions. Below are my summer must-haves, all tried and tested:

Skin prep is vital

Cleanse with Estee Lauder Take it Away Cleanser (1), as the cream texture lends itself to massage and it buffs away dead skin, leaving a smoother, more radiant complexion. Tone with a spritz of Shu Uemura Depsea Water (2) to freshen skin – and you – plus, it smells and feels divine.  Moisturize with your choice of Crème de la Mer The Moisturising Lotion
(3)
(for dry skin), Alpha H Daily Essential Moisturiser (4)(for normal skin) or Darphin Hydraskin Light (5)  (for oily skin).  After exfoliating lips with Sara Happ The Lip Scrub (6), nourish with Dior Rose de Baume (7), which will also have a therapeutic effect on your soul.

Give the illusion of bare skin without feeling exposed

Bring undetectable radiance to your complexion with Burberry Fresh Glow (1), applying directly over your moisturiser – those lucky ones with great skin can stop here, as this makes skin look instantly amazing.  Those who want to fake it a little, for a bronzed look, should use the skin perfectingOmorovicza Sunkiss (2). Even skin tone with a sheer base of Burberry Sheer Foundation (3), mixing with a little moisturizer before applying, for lighter coverage.   Use light-reflecting concealers like Burberry Sheer Concealer (4) to conceal any under-eye darkness, and Dior Skinflash (5) to highlight the skin, and heavier textured concealer like BECCA Compact Concealer (6) to erase any blemishes.  Skin should look dewy rather than sweaty, so be sure to remove any ugly shine around the T-zone withMAC Blot Powder (7).

Use subtle colour to define features

Give a natural feeling of flushed cheeks by pressing Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge (1) onto the apples using fingertips, or for a more translucent look (that won’t budge if you go swimming), use the waterproof stain BECCA Beach Tint (2). If you’re still feeling a little pale, brush Givenchy Poudre Bonne Mine (3)  into skin for that sunkissed feel.  Curl lashes with Shu Umuera Lash Curler (4) before applying Lancome Hypnosis Mascara (5) (if you like lots of lashes) or Shu Uemura Ultimate Expression Mascara (6) (if you want a light, waterproof lash). Open eyes with a touch of RMS Living Luminizer (7) on the inner corners of the eyes, and give lips a hint of sheer colour with moisturizing formulas like Burberry Lip Mist (8) and Clinique Chubby Stick (9).
