The Pierces

- By Benjamin Stelly -

American Vogue released the 2011 Best Dressed Special Issue on November 15th with the Olsen Twins gracing the cover, as well as nods to this year’s best fashion moments given to us by sisters. Ashley and Mary-Kate, Beyonce and Solange, Ruby and Lily Aldridge, The Duchess of Cambridge and Pippa Middleton, to name a few, are being recognized by Vogue for their contributions to looking good. We all know these names, and it’s safe to assume we all agree, but there’s a new pair of chic sisters that will be stirring up the competition in 2012: Allison and Catherine Pierce.  The Pierces, as they are more aptly known, not only have drop-dead style sense, but also deliver a sizeable punch with their music.

My favorite thing about The Pierces, is that I was genuinely hooked from the moment I heard the opening lines of “We are Stars”; no pretty faces or fanfair to distract me, just yet. Their music has that haunting ability to put you in a particular place in time – an other worldly sounding folk-gypsy music, that has me aimlessly lost in the throws of their lyrics as I walk through New York City streets. I tune into The Pierces to be washed over with seductive melodies and clean voices – a simple, incredibly powerful combination in today’s hyper-saturated music market.

Catherine (right) and Allison (left) grew up in Birmingham, Alabama.  Their father played guitar for a living, while their mother was a painter. When I asked them if this influenced their own artistic direction, they told me there was never a time when music was not, in some way or another, integrated in their lives. Refreshingly, they didn’t feel pressured by their creative parents to pursue music as a career. It was their own natural constitution that guided them to do what they love – and they love to make music. When asked who their music was for – or what they wanted their listeners to feel – they said, “Ultimately, we try to make music we love and then throw it out into the Universe. It’s really rewarding when people embrace it and we hope it makes them feel something… happy, sad, angry. That’s why we listen to music, to take us out of our everyday life and to feel more alive!” In our world, where everyone creates and everyone is a critic, The Pierces natural desire to make something beautiful and something that they themselves would listen to, grounds their work.

The Pierces approach their music in very much the same light as they approach their lives.  Their credo reads something like: you can learn from every experience, every situation and every place. “There is so much happening around us everyday and if you are open to inspiration it will find you.” Reluctant to be defined in any way, both sisters responded in similar ways when I asked what the world should know about them. -
-
Allison: “I am someone that wants to be happy and feel fulfilled on many levels. Life is a constantly evolving journey and my goal is to find the flow and stay in it because that is where I feel the best”  -
-
Catherine: “People are constantly evolving and growing, putting labels on yourself keeps you in the same place instead of allowing you to experience things as they come”.

The Pierces have found much success in the past year with their latest album “You & I”, marking number 4 on the UK album charts. They just completed their second tour this October and have just released their latest single “Kissing You Goodbye” which we’ve posted for your viewing pleasure below!
